Brain is one of the most wonderful machines on this planet. The cerebrospinal fluid in which the brain is suspended acts as a shock absorber whereas the skull protects it from external trauma and infections. In addition, the brain is protected from internal infections by the blood-brain-barrier.
The blood-brain-barrier is made up of tight junctions formed by the astrocytes surrounding the blood capillaries inthe brain. This blood-brain-barrier allows only essential nutrients and gases to enter the brain from the blood and prevent any other unwanted and harmful substances such as toxins from entering the brain.
The functions of the brain are very complex and widespread. They can be grouped in to motor, sensory and other functions such as memory. The motor activities can be further divided in to voluntary and involuntary activities. Voluntary activities include activities such as walking, picking up a pen, etc.
Involuntary activities include activities such as breathing, the rate of beating of the heart, etc. It is also involved in sensory interpretation of the information received by the sense organs like the eyes and ears. The brain is never fully at rest even while sleeping. Isn’t that tiring and amazing at the same time?

One of the most fascinating things about the brain is the function of memory. The brain has the ability to receive, understand, act and even store any information. Due to this, we are able to learn to perform actions and remember them. We are able to learn languages and communicate with the others.
Another interesting function of the brain is the ability to respond to emotions. There is an emotional center in the brain is that is responsible for interpreting all the feelings and emotional aspect of us. There is also a center responsible for controlling our social behavior.
In spite of identifying these various functions of the brain, man has still not able to figure out how the brain works and manages to interpret and function in this way. The main mechanism that operates in the brain that is responsible for the way it functions is still a mystery.
So, the brain is this fascinating, amazing organ that is extremely necessary for a person to live.
