Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg visited India and spoke at the townhall Q&A session at IIT Delhi yesterday. He interacted with the students and faculty and answered their questions on a myriad of topics. However the most endearing comments Zuckerberg made were to do with his love for India.
More than 8,000 strong student communities at IIT Delhi wanted to attend the session and ask Mr. Zuckerberg questions. But sadly, only one in nine students was allowed into the hall as the selection process was done through lottery!
Some of the exciting issues the Facebook honcho spoke about included Net Neutrality, Taj Mahal, and Internet.org. He visited the Taj Mahal yesterday and said he always wanted to see the monument of love built by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan for Mumtaz. He said,’ It’s incredible what people can build — and what love can motivate us to build’. He called it, ‘even more stunning than I expected.’ This is his second visit to India since last year.
Here are a few things he said at the townhall Q&A session-
- I have made every mistake that you can possibly make. If you do something good, you have the strength to power through mistakes.’
- ‘We are all humans, no one is perfect.’
- Focus on what drives you and not on the mistakes.
- I have seen people who are trying to start a company without figuring out what they want to do.
- The skills you learn in college are what will help you the most. Just keep doing what you want to and do not let people get in the way.
- I built the first version of Facebook because I wanted to connect to people in my school. There was not one moment when I had a revelation that Facebook would be this big! Back then it didn’t even occur to me that one day the entire world would be using it!
- India is the largest democracy. It is one of the countries where you cannot connect the world without connecting India. Connecting people in India is one of the most important things we can do for the world. India also has many users on Facebook and WhatsApp which is also part of our community. So they are part of the people we want to connect.
- 15 Million connected to the Internet, all thanks to Internet.org
- About 4 million people do not have access to Internet mainly because of affordability and lack of awareness.
- We have made investments in introducing new types of schools in Africa, we hope to bring the same to India too.
- No matter what you do, you will make a ton of mistakes. You learn by trial and error.
