Joint Entrance Examination(JEE) is going for a change in selection
procedure with the introduction of Aptitude test, from 2017. Only those candidates, who pass this aptitude test would be eligible for appearing in JEE exam, for admission in various IIT/NITs. But why is JEE going for this significant overhaul and what will be its impact? Let’s find out.

Actually the story starts with the problems with the current selection
procedure. The major drawback of current system is that people who
understand the concepts and people who mug up things, are scoring more
or less similar marks. So this is leading to the deterioration of
quality of intake of students. Those students who mug up things and
pass such exams and are studying in these prestigious institutes, are
adopting the same ONE NIGHT STUDY and MUG UP EVERYTHING to pass
semesters. This is leading to a decline of students who are innovative
and can think out of the box. IIT/NITs were not set up by government
to produce lakhs of engineers every year. It was set up with a motto
of giving quality education to the bright students of this country who
can think different.

Actually, the art of gaming these exams are outcome of so many
coaching institutes. A lot of coaching centres are just focusing on
AIR of their students and not their knowledge. This has made a huge
gap between the students who get selected in exams like JEE and what
IIT/NITs really want. These drawbacks must not be overlooked and thus
JEE is introducing the concept of aptitude tests.

The aptitude tests will be designed in a manner such that it tests the
scientific abilities of the aspirant. It will help in judging how the
candidate will respond in real life problems. These tests will test
how deep the aspirant has grasped the concepts and thus filter all
those who just mug up things. These aptitude tests can’t be gamed
through as they don’t require special preparations like JEE(Main) and
JEE(Advanced) now. Aptitude tests act like mirror to a candidate.
Another importance of introducing aptitude tests and admission through
a common exam in various IIT/NITs is that it will lead to an
enhancement of aptitude of students admitted ,particularly in NITs.
So this idea of aptitude tests has a lot of benefits attached to
it,but its new in the field of engineering entrances and thus we have
to wait to see how much success it achieves.
